SOS5 -Problem Framework

The SOS5 problem framework is applicable to many creative problem domains such as engineering, business development and television/film production where opportunities must be evaluated in order to allocate knowledge, money and time resources. The framework provides a reference point to begin your evaluation.

Summary

A  concise description of the problem, opportunity, challenge, or knowledge incongruity is presented. The significance of this is given in terms of the benefits of finding a solution or consequences of not having a solution. Finally, this summary, offers solutions in terms of a strategy, structure, system and schedule of action.

Opportunity

This section identifies the problem, opportunity, challenge or knowledge incongruity in terms of a current situation and a desired situation. Where appropriate, the causality of the situation is explained. The magnitude and complexity of the opportunity should be identified.

Significance

This section answers the question, "So what?" What is the significance of the problem in terms of benefits if a solution is implemented and / or in terms of the consequences of not finding a solution.

Strategy

By taking into account available resources, external forces and trends, this strategy section develops a framework for solving the problem.

Structure

The solution structure identifies the "players" involved in the solution and their static relationships. Player may be for example, stakeholders or automated systems.

Systems

Systems identify how the "players" interact to form the solution.

Schedule,

The time management philosophy, expected results and costs are outlined in this section.
